Sumo wrestler in Japan has died, one month after a concussion

A sumo wrestler in Japan has died aged 28, one month after enduring a concussion during a match. Hibikiryu, whose real title is Mitsuki Amano, died from acute respiratory failure, the Japan Sumo Association declared on Thursday.

Those at the scene have confronted criticism for taking more than five minutes to provide him medical assistance. The sport has been criticized in the past for failing to protect its wrestlers from concussions.

Hibikiryu was inevitably carried out on a stretcher and transported to a hospital in Tokyo. During the travel, he complained of numbness, Japanese media report.

The wrestler had begun appearing signs of improvement and eventually started to move. But on Wednesday his health weakened and he died the same day.
