India might be placed in the UK’s travel ban list

India ought to be set on the UK’s “red list” for travel after the revelation of a new coronavirus variation, according to a leading scientist. Prof Danny Altmann, from Imperial College London, says it is “mystifying” and “confounding” that those flying in from the nation are not required to stay in a hotel.

He warned that the Indian transformation of the infection might “scupper” the UK’s way to advance easing of limitations. In spite of the lockdown and immunization program driving to cases falling to a seven-month low.

Authorities have designated the new strain a variant under investigation instead of a variant of concern, such as the Manaus (Brazilian) or South African variants. However, Altmann said he suspected it would be raised to a variant of concern as, just like the South African variation, it holds properties that permit it to avoid the coronavirus immunizations currently on offer, and since it is more transmissible, comparable to the Californian version of Covid.

Around one in 480 individuals in private families in Britain had Covid-19 within the week to 10 April. By far the least figure since the week to 19 September last year, according to estimates from the Office for National Statistics.
