Facebook made a $9bn profit despite the whistleblower issue

Facebook’s third-quarter profits were higher than expected, despite the company continuing to face the negative press as a result of leaked internal documents. The social media behemoth profited $9 billion in the three months to September, up from $7.8 billion the previous year.

It was, however, harmed by a new privacy update to Apple’s iOS 14 operating system, which made it more difficult for brands to target advertisements to specific users. It comes on the heels of new allegations of unethical behavior made by a former employee.

Frances Haugen has made public a cache of internal documents alleging that Facebook prioritized profit over user safety. According to multiple media outlets, the documents show that Facebook struggled to moderate content that promoted hate speech and sex trafficking outside of the United States.

The social media behemoth reported a 6% increase in monthly users to 2.91 billion in the year to September 30. Despite its strong profits, the company’s revenue fell slightly short of analyst expectations, owing to downside risks caused by Apple’s privacy policies.
