A baby was sold for $500 by a family facing starvation in Afghanistan

Afghanistan is facing the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with the country’s situation deteriorating dramatically since the Taliban seized power in August. International funds that had been supporting the country’s fragile economy have been halted as the world considers how to deal with the Taliban regime.

Poor and hungry Afghan families are selling their children in a desperate attempt to raise funds after the Taliban took control of the country, putting the fragile economy on the verge of collapse.

The buyer was an unidentified man who claimed he intended to raise the girl so she could marry his son, but there is no assurance of his motives. He paid $250 upfront, enough to support the family for a few months, and will pay the remainder when he comes back to pick up the baby once she is able to walk.
